This was as usual a nice end-of-year event and our thanks to all those who took part. With so many of our officials away at the Olympic Test Event, it was good to see the "reserve team" showing they can run events too!

By the way, we will have SIX club officials at the Olympics, an excellent haul.

Actually, the team technically finished in first place out of the 6 teams in their category, but had to conceed some contests because of a weight surplus and so finished second in practice. Nevertheless this was a good result. Frankie Marston also took a bronze in the seniors, guesting for Tsukuru.

The competion, now in its 14th year, was once again a success and our thanks to all involved. Next year the decision has been taken to move to Wyre Forest Glades because the Glades is proving to be a very popular venue and this could add a new dimension to the competition. The Bev Teams is Britain's best team event and a great way to remember one of our club's finest players.

Thank you again to all those who took part, whether as players, coaches, spectators or officials, for the fine spirit shown.

3rd dan: Matt Dutton

Matt becomes our third player this year (the others being Tom Walker and Tony Leroux) to get his 3rd dan.

Very good results. Matt won the 2nd dan category with 6 wins and Tom won the 3rd dan category, also with 6 wins. Sarah, as expected, dominated the women's section, winning both the 2nd dan and above category and the open.

As a result, Matt and Sarah now have enough points for their 3rd dans, though Sarah will have to wait until she is 20 next September, the minimum age. Tom also got more than half way towards his 4th dan in one day.

The weekend was very hard work but a great success. Over 70 clubs took part and Samurai finished top of the medals table with 8 golds overall. There was a good atmosphere and the Glades is proving a very good venue. Our thanks to the referees, table staff, first aiders, stewards and all those who moved all the mats from both the Samurai club and our Gilt Edge venue to the Glades and back again.

The Scottish Open was certainly a much tougher event this year with a big foreign entry. Kate had four tough contests and won them all to take the gold. This was her first competition back after a shoulder operation and a warm-up for the Swedish Open the following weekend, but turned into a tough event in itself.

Fantastic performance by our new kata stars, who had taken gold at their kata debut as a pair (Brendan had done some kata the previous year but Frankie is new to it) at the Clive Taylor Kata Open in July and have now added this title. What's more, they proportionally outscored all of the senior pairs as well.

We now look forward to Frankie coaching her dad when he comes to do his 5th dan theory and needs the kata ...

A great performance from Kate, finishing 5th out of 29 quality players at this premier event. It was nearly so much more, too, because having had a bye and two wins to reach the semi-finals, Kate was dominating the semi-final, had her opponent in a groundhold at one point and had a strangle on at another point when the referees called a halt prematurely but then made a single error and was caught.

Still, this is a good result from Kate, who is now looking very much back to her best after a shoulder injury kept her out for most of 2010.

A fantastic result for Sarah at this European Cup event. She defeated a Polish player who has been extremely successful at European Cadet level this year in her first contest by ippon. Then she had a Lithuanian player and defeated her by ippon in the quarter-final. In the semi-final she had the European Junior Number One, and the scores were level with just 30 seconds to go when Sarah picked up a second penalty for gripping and then had to attack to try to equalise and was thrown. In the repechage final she defeated a Croatian by ippon to take the bronze. Great result!

Also well done to Ben Newbury, who was running the event as the first part of his assessment for Competition Controller, and did a superb job. When the assessment process is complete that will give us four competition controllers at the club, more than most areas and some home countries have!

Wyre Forest District Council have announced that for the 5th time in 9 years, Samurai Judo Club has been chosen as their Sports Club Of The Year 2010.

Sally Moon has also won the Junior Female Sports Person award, in a year when she has won gold at the British Junior Nationals, Heart Of England, Kent International Open, British Schools Championships and Welsh Open.
